This course provides a broad overview of key topics and theories in the fields of media and communication. This course would be well suited to those seeking both a basic introduction to the field and a continuation on these initial themes. While we will briefly touch upon interpersonal communication, the focus of this course is on public communication—journalism, mass and digital media. We will give special attention to key theories that are of interest to the field of political communication such as agenda setting, framing, priming, and cultivation theory, and discuss their application to the current digital media environment. We further examine the role of digital technology in changing media-related business models and the implications for freedom of expression and civic life. (Lecturer: Tijana Milosevic)
